Port Waratah Coal Services in Carrington Newcastle has been a client of CCC for over 15 years. When it came time for PWCS to update their Main Site Induction, they came to CCC for the project’s development.

A script was developed in conjunction with a representative from PWCS to cover all aspects of the companies safety, policies and procedures. Once the script was to shooting sign off, CCC sent out a crew to gather the many shots required to cover all aspects of the highly detailed induction. This involved setting up small sequences and little stories to allow the concepts being discussed to be illustrated as interestingly and efficiently as possible. Staff were used as actors to show these basic principles, all in PWCS safety clothing, of course.

All post production was performed at CCC’s Mayfield studio. This involved piecing together the program, getting it to first draft, then giving a copy to PWCS to ensure we were on the right track. As the project developed, more material was required to cover new policies which were being introduced at the time regarding port safety and security. CCC shot and incorporated this material into the final version.

The induction was designed to be modular and to use DVD technology, allowing the facilitator to jump throughout the induction if required to specific areas of interest, or to run various smaller induction programs in the Main Induction. Click to View Video

The Induction is also in the final stages of being converted to a CD-ROM based induction as well to allow individuals to go through the material by themselves. This version has interactive questions at the end of the induction to allow the user to be thoroughly tested in their retention of the material covered in the induction. These results can then be emailed to a supervisor and kept in a database, or otherwise printed out.

PWCS delivers this induction to over 2000 contrators and staff per annum who enter the site, ensuring that PWCS can track who is on site, and the level of induction each person has attained. The model for the PWCS DVD induction is currently being investigated by several other major companies in the Hunter and Sydney regions due to its ease of use and thorough coverage of policies and concepts.
